Upper woodwind and brass together in unison on octaves, with strings. Woodwind, brass and strings together. This is typical Romantic scoring, with the violins carrying the melody, and a prominent horn countermelody. A variety of colours, with sustained horns and trombones surrounded by a string melody with woodwind in octaves, then pizzicato strings as the brass strengthen. A famous passage, obviously featuring horns, but notice how the tone is softened and lent a ‘shimmer’ by doubled strings. The melody is on flute, oboes, clarinets, and cellos in octaves. Melody in octave strings, with woodwind accompaniment. The colours change as horns are added and the music starts to swell. Woodwind with piccolo trumpet (and string harmonics). Strings building, brass and woodwind joinging in. Chords: strings and woodwinds, followed by brass with strings pizzicato. Woodwind, horns and strings in rhythmic unison and close harmony. Low woodwind and brass accompany high cellos and basses.
