A variety of colours, with sustained horns and trombones surrounded by a string melody with woodwind in octaves, then pizzicato strings as the brass strengthen. A famous passage, obviously featuring horns, but notice how the tone is softened and lent a ‘shimmer’ by doubled strings. The melody is on flute, oboes, clarinets, and cellos in octaves. Melody in octave strings, with woodwind accompaniment. The colours change as horns are added and the music starts to swell. Woodwind with piccolo trumpet (and string harmonics).
